Why would I ever write something so traumatizing?

Now some people have told me after reading Color Me Blue that it's a pretty traumatizing novel. While I personally disagree, I understand how some people might be affected in that way. As I have written in my 'My Books' section of this blog, where you can go to buy any of my books, Color Me Blue is not for everyone. It is for a mature reader who knows what they're getting into, as the book involves sexual assault and other mature subjects.

My mom asked me why I'd chose to write about such dark and sensitive topics. My reply was something like this, you see, I've always been fascinated by darker subject matters and I like my stories to represent the way the world really is, even if it is set in a fantasy or otherworldly place. So while Blue, her father, and the other characters in Color Me Blue may be color people in a mysterious caste system, they are also. . .human. They experience the trauma, and abuse, and death, that humans have to experience in their daily lives.

While you may have never been sexually assaulted, the sexual assault is more of a stand in for something ugly and horrible the reader has experienced. It represents the darkness of this world that WE all live in, that no matter what we do, we will be helpless to stop. I mean, as many improvements we make, as many diseases as we cure, and laws we enact, and wars we end, bad things will befall mankind until Jesus comes in the second coming and we're taken to some place better. So, when I was writing Color Me Blue, the traumas that befall the characters are one of the ways I make them human, I make the audience able to relate to them.

These traumas also link directly to the theme of Color Me Blue, and what I was trying to say in the novel. Every single character in Color Me Blue is dealing with a problem, and for the most part, it is not a problem they can change. You cannot change what has already happened to you. As much as we hate to admit it, we are NOT always in control of our lives. Death, illness, crimes, they find us when we did not ask for them, and haunt us for long after they are gone. The themes of Color Me Blue is about coping with these harsh realties and learning how to carry on, even with these hardships that have found us.

That is why I chose to write about such dark and sensitive things. Because we live in a world of dark and sensitive things.
